HISTORY

The original name of the Cairu Island was Aracajuru, which means House of the Sun in the indigenous language of Tupi-Guarani.
Tinharé Island's history is deeply connected to early Portuguese colonization, African diaspora resistance through quilombos [communities formed by escaped African slaves], and a vibrant cultural heritage that continues to be explored and celebrated today.
Before Portuguese colonization, the region around Tinharé Island was inhabited by indigenous peoples, likely from the Tupi-Guarani linguistic group, who lived along the coast and relied on fishing, hunting, and small-scale agriculture.
With the arrival of the Portuguese in the early 16th century, the island became part of one of the earliest colonial footholds in Brazil. The nearby island of Boipeba, founded by Jesuits in 1537, served as a religious and missionary center aimed at converting indigenous populations. This early colonial presence established a pattern of settlement and land use that shaped the island’s development.
From the 16th century onward, enslaved Africans who escaped plantations and colonial oppression sought refuge in remote areas like Tinharé. These communities became centers of resistance, preserving African cultural practices, languages, and social structures.
Historically, Tinharé and its surrounding islands were also involved in small-scale agriculture, fishing, and later, coconut and palm oil production. The island’s strategic location made it a point of contact for trade and cultural exchange along the Bahian coast. In the 20th century, Tinharé began to develop as a tourist destination, especially places like Morro de São Paulo, which attracted visitors for its natural beauty, beaches, and cultural heritage. This shift brought economic opportunities but also challenges related to environmental sustainability and cultural preservation.
Today, Tinharé Island is recognized for its rich Afro-Brazilian culture, traditional festivals, and historical sites.
